we really don't recommend them being any taller. For one they look out of proportion and two when sitting down the taller you go you loose the view of the fire. You want to always be looking down on the fire when sitting, its much more enjoyable. If you want to raise it up, we do recommend a barrier always, if you choose something like concrete pavers, those will add a good 1 1/1/4 to the height, but remember, its all about relaxing and getting that view of the fire you build.
